SOCIETY OF LONDON LADY GOLF CAPTAINS – Potted history

The inaugural meeting of the Society was held on Monday 25th November 1957 where Mrs P Samuel formally proposed that a Society be formed and named The Society of London Lady Golf Captains, having first informed the LGU and receiving their blessing. Mrs P Samuel of Malden Golf Club was elected as the first Captain.

Initially, clubs within a radius of 20 miles of Charing Cross were contacted and elicited an overwhelming response. The radius was increased to 25 miles in 1976, to 30 miles in 2012 and to 35 miles in 2020.

The initial entrance fee was one guinea (£1.05), and the annual subscription was 10 shillings and sixpence (52.5p), non-playing members annual fee was 5 shillings (25p).

Initially two meetings were to be held, one in Spring and one in Autumn, on approximately the same days each year. Both meetings were held over two days, with up to 30 holes being played on each day with lunch after 18.

The Lady Captains of Malden Golf Club offered a cup to be played for at the first meeting – the origin of the Malden Cup.

Initial membership was 104, increasing to 440 by early 1960.

The first AGM was held on Friday 28th November 1958 at the Café Royal, Regent Street, London W1, followed by luncheon at a cost of 25 shillings (£2.05).

In 1959, the Society was given two cups – the Finchley Rose Bowl donated by the Club Captains of Finchley Golf Club and the Fulwell Cup, donated by the Club Captains of Fulwell Golf Club. The Finchley Rose Bowl was to be played for in the Autumn and the Fulwell Cup in the Spring.

In 1961, the founder and first Captain, Mrs P Samuel presented a cup to be called the Founders Cup, to be played for in the morning round of the Autumn meeting.

At the AGM on 26th November 1976, the radius of eligible clubs was increased to 25 miles
